Cheryl, I noticed that you are from Georgia USA - welcome to the forum
Is the bird native to your area? It has different head markings to most I have seen here in Australia.
If you saw it take flight - what position was its head in - outstretched or tucked in & were its legs trailing behind? -see diagram of in-flight heron Vs crane in this link http://www.birdwatchersgeneralstore.com/cranes.htm
Thanks for all the input, I did not see it in flight, only walking through the water, it didn't seem too afraid of me. I haven't seen it since that one time. I was hoping it would take up residence in that swampy area. I'll keep my eyes open. Great bird watching website cackles, I'm thinking Heron. It was just a neat site as I have never seen one up close before, heck, I've never seen one at all. I'm glad I got a good picture.

it would make a lovely painting. i am pinching it to have a go at as i need some reflections and you have the water in the background.....don't worry it won't go beyond my pallet
