HI Ruff,
Thankyou for your comment. I buy my name brand chick starter feed fresh every week during "chick season". That is no guarantee for "freshness" I know, as it could sit in the produce store for weeks or months. Is it possible to detect this "rancid" character in bought feed?
I have been in touch with Paul Rogers who has confirmed that other growers are also reporting this issue. It certainly is difficult to pin point the cause but I suspect it could be genetic, associated with the very small gene pool in Australia for this breed.
